Luke Berzins

My journey in the investment industry began during university. As part of my business management degree at the University of Leicester, I undertook a ‘year in industry’ placement at a private wealth management firm. From this experience, I knew I wanted to work in the sector but more specifically in the investment research and portfolio management area.
West Yorkshire Pension Fund’s Graduate Scheme is providing me with the opportunity to develop into an investment analyst. I have enjoyed working alongside experienced and skilled portfolio managers and continue to learn their techniques that have provided the pension fund with sustainable long-term growth. So far, I have been exposed to a variety of asset classes with the greatest focus on public equity. I have worked with portfolio managers across several regions and completed research projects to help inform their investment decisions. Some projects include research on the European IT sector, US cybersecurity sector, and the video on demand/streaming industry.
Alongside my day-to-day work, I have been completing CISI professional qualifications to enhance my knowledge in capital markets. When not studying, I am a keen golf, squash and cricket player. I enjoy watching Yorkshire and England cricket matches, particularly at Headingley but would love to watch England abroad in the future.
From the moment I first encountered the world of finance, I knew I wanted to be a part of something dynamic, impactful, and challenging. My journey began at De Montfort University, where I studied Investment and Finance, a course that laid the groundwork for my understanding of markets, asset classes, and financial strategies. This academic foundation gave me the knowledge, but it was through hands-on experience that I truly discovered my passion for the investment world.

During my time at university, I participated in the 10,000 Interns scheme, a program that WYPF actively supports. Through this initiative, I secured an internship with Close Brothers, and it was here that I got my first real taste of applying investment theory in a practical setting. Seeing the fast-paced decision-making process in action and understanding how real-world financial issues are solved ignited my passion to pursue this field even further.

At WYPF, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from a team of professionals who have collectively acted as my mentors. One of the standout features of this role is how integrated I’ve been in all aspects of the investment process. From attending project meetings to site visits, I’ve seen firsthand how investment theories are put into action. The support I’ve received has not only enhanced my technical skills but also shaped my ability to think critically and contribute meaningfully to the team.
